Newmark Watches Featured in Yatra Magazine: Restoring a legacy

As Newmark approaches the end of its 150th anniversary, we’re proud to share that Yatra Magazine has featured an in-depth interview with our Chairman, Wade Newmark, alongside a conversation with our Marketing Director, Jordan Whittingham.

The article explores who we are, why our heritage matters, and how a small British brand from 1875 continues to find relevance - and momentum - in 2025.

This feature arrives at a meaningful moment for the company: a time when we are not only celebrating the past, but shaping the next era of Newmark with renewed purpose.

Honouring a 150-Year Legacy

In the interview, Wade speaks openly about what it means to be the custodian of a brand with such extraordinary history:

“The Newmark name represents a strand of British ingenuity dating back to the late 19th century… I often think of myself less as an owner and more as a caretaker of a story that began long before me.”

This notion of stewardship sits at the heart of everything we do. Newmark is not a revival driven by nostalgia. It is a legacy continued - built on reliability, honesty, durability, and purposeful design.

The Moment That Sparked the Revival

The modern chapter of Newmark began when Wade discovered an original RAF-issued 6BB chronograph from the 1980s - the watch that would ultimately inspire the rebirth of the brand.

“Holding that original 6BB and realising the brand had vanished… that was the moment I knew it deserved to live again.”

That single watch connected past to present, becoming the blueprint for the design philosophy that guides every Newmark release today.

Heritage-Inspired, Modern-Minded

Unlike many revival brands, Newmark doesn’t simply replicate old designs. Wade explains:

“We start with respect for the past, not replication… It’s about evolution, not imitation.”

This means staying faithful to the essence of each original model while embracing modern materials and technologies - sapphire, improved water resistance, precision manufacturing, and reliable modern movements.

Jordan builds on this in his own interview by describing the brand’s visual language, rooted in classic, timeless design but constantly refined to remain fresh in a digital-first world.

The result? Watches that feel familiar and genuinely new at the same time.

Rediscovering the Story of Newmark

Much of the brand’s early history had been lost to time. Wade describes the process of rebuilding the Newmark story as “detective work” - drawing from:

  • vintage catalogues

  • military records

  • trademark archives

  • surviving watches in private collections

This research uncovered an unexpectedly international story: a British brand worn by both servicemen and civilians, surviving world wars and the quartz revolution before disappearing in the 1990s.

Reviving Newmark didn’t just bring a watch back. It brought an entire chapter of British industrial history back into the light.

British Watchmaking in 2025

Wade’s perspective on British watchmaking today is clear:

“We may not have the scale of Switzerland or Japan, but we have authenticity - smaller makers doing things their own way.”

It’s this independent spirit that has helped Newmark grow from a single model to a respected global micro-brand with a loyal customer base and watches on wrists around the world.

The Heart of the Brand: The 6BB

When asked which model best represents the soul of Newmark, Wade’s answer is immediate: “The 6BB Chronograph, without question.”

The modern 6BB revival became the starting point for Newmark’s second life - functional, elegant, and connected deeply to British aviation heritage.

Jordan echoes this ethos when discussing Newmark’s tone, community, and design approach: honest, accessible, and built for real enthusiasts.

A Brand Built to Last

In discussing sustainability, Wade offers a simple philosophy:

“Longevity is the quietest form of sustainability.”

Every Newmark watch is built to be serviceable, durable and worn - not kept “mint” in a safe. Our aim is to create timepieces that hold their value not through rarity, but through integrity.

And looking ahead?

“If, in 50 years, someone finds a Newmark from today, straps it on, and feels the same connection I felt with that RAF chronograph, then we’ve succeeded.”
